The seminar deals with the most recent research work I performed at the Aerospace Science and Technology Department of Politecnico di Milano.
The research work presented was carried out in the framework of the investigation of combustion processes occurring in a particular type of chemical rocket engines, namely the hybrid rocket engines. Two approaches were used: an experimental approach, based on tests performed on a 2D lab scale burner, and a numerical approach, based on OpenFoam code simulation of the combustion processes occurring in a hybrid rocket engine combustion chamber.
The seminar briefly presents the theoretical background of the hybrid propulsion technology, summarizing the main concepts used during the investigation. Then, some examples of the typical results obtained in the test facility at SPLab (Space Propulsion Laboratory) of Politecnico di Milano are given. Finally, some preliminary numerical simulation results are given, together with the indication of the work currently in progress.
